It’s the holiday season, but you may not know it, looking at one east Mesa condo complex.

Just days before Christmas, some people living near Southern and Ellsworth were told by their homeowners association their decorations are violating the rules.

"They gave us 10 days to take down the decorations,” said resident Carole Rector.

Letters addressed to individual residents threatened fines, even legal action over the lights, and other hung decorations.

“First of all, when I got the letter, I called the director of the association and I said, 'are you kidding me?'" said Rector.

The HOA was as serious as the Ghost of Christmas Past.

The rules forbid attaching things to the outside of the condos.

"They can actually put a lien against the property if you don't meet HOA guidelines,” said resident Austin Bennett, who also received a letter.

Bennett says new board members decided to take a hard stance toward protecting the outside of the condos from damage.

ABC15 attempted to contact the property management company for the complex, but a phone call was not returned.
