Phoenix police say a would-be armed robbery suspect tripped and accidentally shot his partner, killing him, before the crime even occurred.

Jose Perez-Torres, 21, and Eric A. Hernandez-Tellez, 19, allegedly conspired to commit an armed robbery of an apartment near 15th Avenue and Camelback Road on September 25.

While walking to the apartment complex, Perez-Torres had a revolver in his hand and stumbled, which caused him to fire his gun. He was walking behind Hernandez-Tellez, who was shot in the upper part of his body.

Police said Perez-Torres ran away, leaving his partner, who died. He was found in Tempe and booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, among others.

Authorities said the 21-year-old admitted to the shooting in an interview with detectives.
