A 14-year-old girl was shot in the chest over the weekend at a shooting range in Casa Grande.

The girl was flown to a hospital in Phoenix and is expected to survive, according to Casa Grande Police spokesman Thomas Anderson. The girl is expected to be released by Tuesday, Anderson said.

Police said the girl was at the public shooting range off Isom Road on Saturday, Nov. 28 with her family. The girl was sitting in a chair near the range when she was shot, Anderson said. The shooter was a family friend, Anderson said.

As the friend attempted to holster his 9mm handgun at the range table, the gun discharged, striking the girl in the upper torso, according to authorities. The girl was about 20 feet away at the time. The incident is being investigated as an accident, Anderson said.

A police park ranger was conducting a security check at the time of the emergency call and helped provide first aid until paramedics arrived.

Detectives have forwarded the report to the Pinal County Attorney's Office for review.

A man who answered the phone at the family friend's listed number declined to comment.
