PHOENIX — This week, ABC15 is focusing on climate change.

Plastic and trash are dumped into landfills every day or found polluting our communities. That is because there is so much of it!

Research shows people buy about one million plastic bottles a minute, but only 23 percent of them are recycled in the United States.

For plastic bags, four trillion are used each year, worldwide. Only 1 percent of them are returned to the store.

Plastic straws have also been a hot topic for cities across the country. Many places have chosen to ban them, and companies are switching to paper straws. That is because half a million straws are used around the world each day.

There is a huge push for people to start using reusable products, which are easier to incorporate into your daily life than you might think.

Here are some simple tips to go green:

  • Bring reusable bags to the grocery.
  • Refuse straws at restaurants.
  • Carry your own water bottle.
  • Be aware of the products you buy. Try to find packaging made of glass or metal. Both are easier to recycle.
