Your drive to get on SR-51 may feel a bit different this week because ADOT is testing ramp meter timing.

Drivers could be sitting on the northbound ramps a little longer than normal, but the end goal is to improve congestion once you're on the freeway.

The current ramp meter system is on a pre-set schedule, and this new technology allows the meters to change based on traffic flow.

“If the rush hour traffic has improved to a point where the ramp meter isn’t needed, that ramp will turn off earlier,” says ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel. “So, that's some good news for drivers.”

This test period will last about three weeks, and ADOT plans to test out meters on southbound SR-51 in the future.
