You will never transport any cargo more precious than your children. State-of-the-art safety features such as airbags are now included in most vehicles, but children should have an even greater level of protection when riding in automobiles.

Here are some helpful tips from our personal injury attorneys to keep your children safe while traveling Arizona roads.

Use proper seating and restraints
Arizona law requires the use of car seats for all children age 4 and under as well as those between the ages of 5 and 7 who are less than 57" tall. Refer to this list for specific guidelines:

  • Newborn until age 2: Rear-facing car seat
  • Age 2 through age 4: Forward-facing car seat
  • Older than 4 and less than 57" tall: Booster seat
  • 57" and taller: Regular seat belt

Regardless of how old or tall your child is, don't put them in a regular seat belt until it fits properly, with the belt across their upper thighs and the shoulder harness across their chest.

Always buy new car seats
The only time used car seats are acceptable is if you get one from a family member or close friend and you know its history. Second-hand car seats purchased online or in resale shops may have been through an accident, which renders them unusable no matter how they look.

Children age 12 and younger should always ride in the back seat
Place them in the middle of the back seat whenever possible for maximum security. No child, including those in rear-facing car seats, should ever sit in front of an air bag.

Set a good example by always using a seat belt
This should happen whether you're the driver or a passenger.
