Who says you cannot choose your family?

The race for the state Senate's District 27 seat is a relative affair.

Democrat incumbent Catherine Miranda is running against Democrat Maritza Miranda Saenz, her stepdaughter.

Both Catherine and Maritza are related to the late Ben Miranda, a long-time state legislator. Political consultant David Waid, who has consulted for Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, tells ABC15 that it is a heated contest.

"My overall take on that race is that it's got all of the drama of the 'Game of Thrones,'" Waid said. "There are so many different pieces going on, it's actually very high stakes."

The Aug. 30 primary between the Miranda ladies all but determines who takes the District 27 seat, which primarily represents South Phoenix.

A Republican challenger has yet to emerge in the race.
