A man was seriously hurt after he fell from the Mud Cliffs area near the Salt River on Saturday, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

MCSO said they were called to the area of the lower Salt River around 8:30 p.m. for a report of an injured man.

The man had been walking to the top of the cliffs when he reportedly fell from the cliff, head first onto the rocks below, according to officials.

As deputies arrived, bystanders were performing CPR on the man who had serious head injuries. Paramedics were able to restore the man's pulse and transported him by airboat to a helicopter that flew him to a hospital in Scottsdale. MCSO said the man's injuries are considered life-threatening.

Detectives are investigating the incident.
