Former House Speaker and GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said raising the minimum wage is not necessarily a good thing.

Gingrich, after speaking at a small business event in Chandler on Tuesday, weighed in on Arizona's Proposition 206, which would raise the state's minimum wage to $10 an hour next year, before a $12 an hour spike in 2020.

"Question is whether or not it's affordable, what we're seeing happening in Seattle is they raised it too fast and they've killed jobs," Gingrich said. "If you incentivize a place like Wendy's to start replacing people with machines, you actually reduce the number of people earning a living."

Early voting on Prop. 206 starts Oct. 12.
