Early campaign signs irk Pinal County residents

The Pinal County Elections Department received a couple complaints - about campaign signs - from residents over the Memorial Day weekend.

Campaign signs from Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles, who's running for reelection, and Pinal County Chief Deputy Steve Henry, who's running for Sheriff Paul Babeu's seat, were apparently up days before they were supposed to be.

"Pinal County Ordinance 2.145.050 provides that campaign signs may be posted no earlier than 90 days prior to the primary election.  The Elections Department notified both candidates of the complaints," Pinal County Elections Director Michele Forney told ABC15.

Forney would not elaborate on whether Voyles and Henry violated the actual ordinance, but noted that she asked both candidates to remove the signs.

Mike Noble, campaign manager for both Voyles and Henry, told ABC15 that the county rule may have been interpreted differently by some supporters.

“Some of our supporters interpreted that to mean that they could immediately post our signs because they calculated the "90 days prior to the primary election" rule to mean "90 days prior to the early ballots," Noble said.

According to Pinal County Attorney's Office spokeswoman Tiffany Davila, the Gila County Attorney is handling election matters with Voyles and Henry.
