Buildings in downtown Globe have been evacuated after a substance was discovered inside a business on Wednesday.

The Globe Fire Department evacuated all buildings in the downtown area from Sycamore to Mesquite streets and Pine to Hill streets.

According to the City of Globe, the substance was found in a storefront near Broad and Oak streets, which is a historic area. The store, which once housed an appliance business, is being renovated to reopen as a men's barbershop.

Officials say the substance is a crystallized material that was believed to have been in the building for a long time. Due to its age, they're taking precautions in case the substance has become volatile.

The City of Globe also said two other potential areas have the hazardous material. Those areas are within the evacuated area.

The DPS hazmat team has been called in to assist. There is no word on when the area will reopen for business.

Officials have not released the name of the substance that was found.
