Arizona residents starting Friday can begin converting their current driver's licenses into a new version called the new "voluntary travel ID" that complies with the federal REAL ID law.

The Motor Vehicle Division says customers will be able to use the servicearizona.com website to make appointments at MVD offices in Flagstaff, Phoenix, Prescott and Tucson to get the new ID.

State officials say there's no need to rush to convert licenses. That's because the federal government has said it will consider current Arizona driver's licenses and ID valid through Oct. 1, 2020 for travel by commercial aircraft and access to secure federal facilities such as military bases.

Arizona legislators faced a January 2016 federal deadline when they enacted a 2015 law allowing the state to provide the new optional licenses.
