Arizona Senate passes 2 bills targeting abortion

The Arizona Senate has passed two bills targeting Planned Parenthood, banning the sale or transfer of fetal tissue for research and preventing state workers from donating to abortion providers through paycheck donations.

Wednesday's 18-11 votes on Senate Bills 1474 and 1485 drew support from all 17 Republican senators present and one Democrat. The other 11 Democrats opposed the measures.

SB 1474 bars abortion providers from transferring fetal tissue for use in research. It was prompted by undercover videos anti-abortion activists say shows Planned Parenthood medical staff discussing fetal tissue sales. Planned Parenthood calls the videos misleading and its Arizona affiliate said it doesn't provide fetal tissue for research.

SB1485 puts into law a ban on charitable donations through paychecks adopted by a board Republican Gov. Doug Ducey controls last year.
