A Senate committee has passed a bill that would ask voters to ban photo radar statewide, but even the Republican sponsor says he wants to change the measure.

Sen. Steve Smith of Maricopa introduced the bill to prevent state and local agencies from using speed and red light cameras.

But Smith said during the hearing he plans to amend the measure to remove the statewide ban and allow communities to decide for themselves.

Rep. Kelly Townsend of Mesa is sponsoring a similar statewide ban.

The proposals are the latest in an annual effort to ban photo radar.

The Committee on Public Safety, Military and Technology passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 1010 on a 3-2 vote Wednesday. The measure now undergoes a standard constitutional review before going to a Senate vote.
