Arizona House security chief dies after brief illness

Arizona House Speaker J.D. Mesnard says House sergeant-at-arms Bob Robles has died after a brief illness.

Mesnard says in an email to House members that Robles died Thursday. He was 63.

Robles was named to oversee order and security in the House chamber when Mesnard became House Speaker early this year. He had been head of House security and worked at the chamber for 9 years.

Robles was known for his easy-going demeanor, broad smile and bright personality. Mesnard said he "always served the public with dedication, decency and unwavering commitment."

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and had previously retired from the Phoenix Fire Department after 20 years of service.

A cause of death and list of survivors wasn't immediately available Thursday
