Firefighters from Peoria responded Thursday afternoon to a 12-month-old that had gotten through a broken pool fence and fell into the water.

Luckily a family member noticed the child was missing and quickly pulled the child to safety. The child was alert and awake when firefighters arrived and was transported in stable condition to the hospital.

Because the family had several children, and a broken fence, the firefighters decided to step in to make sure something like this didn't happen again.

The crew of ladder 191, led by Captain Bob Burkland went to a local Home Depot and bought hardware to fix the pool fence. They also installed two alarms on the doors leading to the backyard.

"We didn't feel right leaving the family in an unsafe situation," said ladder Captain Bob Burkland. "Taking an hour to make this family safer was the right thing to do."

The crew used money from the Peoria Firefighters Charities to buy the items, and Home Depot lent them tools to do the fix.
