Officer Regan McCarthy and his sergeant arrived to a house fire in Goodyear before any firefighters made it to the scene on Tuesday.

And they arrived not a minute too soon.

"Sounded like small explosions going off in the garage," McCarthy said of the fire near Interstate 10 and Estrella Parkway.

The officers learned there was a teenager who was trapped inside, so they sprinted to the back of the house.

"I could hear the yelling and screaming coming from that direction of the house."

A sliding door was open and those screams coming from the house. The voice was that of an 18-year-old man.

"Voice went quiet for a little while," he said.

McCarthy said there was no choice but to go inside.

"Just kind of held my breath and got a little bit low to try to get through the thickest portion of the smoke."

But he was forced back out, and then a figure appeared in the smoke. An 18-year-old man stumbled out.

It was a sigh of relief, followed by a breath of fresh air as the officers walked the man into the arms of medics. He was badly burned, but is alive.

"Makes it that much more rewarding when you get to come to work and make a difference," McCarthy said.

The man is in serious condition and is recovering.
