GLENDALE, AZ — Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers is recovering from a successful quintuple bypass heart surgery Thursday, according to his office.

Weiers was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center on Monday after visiting an urgent care center for health concerns.

"I appreciate all of the heartfelt messages from everyone offering their thoughts and prayers and for their willingness to assist Sandy and I during this time,” said Mayor Weiers in a press release. “I have witnessed firsthand the conditions our healthcare workers are working in due to the pandemic, and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and commitment to our communities.”

He is expected to make a full recovery and will be released within the next week.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for all the messages to both Sandy and I, wishing me all the best throughout this tough situation,” said Mayor Weiers. “I am also grateful for the surgeons and medical staff here as they have done an excellent job every step of the way.”

Vice Mayor Ian Hugh, will fill in to ensure smooth city operations, according to his office.

Weiers was re-elected to a third four-year term in August 2020.
