A man was killed while waiting to cross the street after two cars collided at an intersection, but not before pushing his wife out of the way.

Officials on the scene told ABC15 that a black SUV was traveling northbound on 43rd Avenue when it collided with a white sedan that was traveling south on 43rd.

One of the vehicles was turning as the other was traveling straight, and both cars collided head-on when in the intersection.

The black SUV traveled towards the northeast corner where a man and his wife were standing waiting to cross the street. Officials said the man pushed his wife out of the way, and he was struck and killed by the SUV.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, three men were transported to hospitals in critical conditions after two cars collided near 43rd and Peoria avenues.

A 35-year-old man was sent to a hospital in extremely critical condition, but it is not yet known if the 35-year-old man is the individual who was killed.

Officials are encouraging people to navigate around the area as they continue to investigate the incident.
