According to DPS, a trooper with the department pulled over a car during a traffic stop in the area. The trooper went back to his patrol car to complete paperwork when a small Hyundai SUV lost control and collided with the patrol car.
The impact forced the patrol car into the violator vehicle that the trooper had pulled over. Following this, a commercial vehicle lost control and collided into the center median wall, hitting the Hyundai that had struck the patrol car.
Someone inside the commercial vehicle was ejected into the westbound lanes of traffic, landed by the shoulder and HOV lane, and is currently in critical condition.
