Tempe police identify suspect killed after stabbing officer

Authorities have identified the suspect shot and killed after stabbing a police officer last week.

Tuesday, police said the man killed was 25-year-old Tristan Long.

Police say Long stabbed a Tempe officer responding for a report of a man with a knife near Rural Road and Southern Avenue on May 16.

Police say a second officer observed Long assaulting the first and fired several shots at Long, who later died at the hospital.

The officer who was stabbed has been with the department for 19 years, and the officer who fired the shots has been with Tempe police for 18 years. Officials have not released their names.
