Police say a man who barricaded himself in the bathroom of a medical facility has been taken into custody.

Officers responded around 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon to an urgent care center near Scottsdale and Curry roads. Police said staff called after a patient went into the bathroom and did not come out.

Workers told law enforcement a man and his girlfriend arrived at the center for medical assistance around 2:50 p.m. The man seemed fine, and went t use the restroom.

Staff became concerned and called police after the man did not emerge after more than 30 minutes passed, according to a release from the Tempe Police Department.

Police evacuated the building, and used canisters to smoke the man out of the bathroom. When he opened the door, officers said he ran into a glass window, shattering it. The man was also hit with a Taser as police tried to control him.

The man, who police did not identify, was not seriously injured and was taken to a nearby hospital. Police said he has mental issues and might have been under the influence of drugs.

The urgent care will be closed for the rest of the night, and police said it would probably reopen Sunday.
