The clock is ticking for a Tempe animal shelter.

"Lost Our Home" has six months to raise $200,000 so they can buy their building and keep helping pets and their owners. It's a unique shelter that cares for pets for free if the owner is going through a hard time.

From playful pups, to cuddly cats, "Lost Our Home" adopts out more than 850 dogs and cats each year. But they also step in when people can't care for their own pets.

"Pet parents saying, 'I need to stay with my family member for a couple months until I get back on my feet again,'" founder Jodi Polanski said. "'Can you just watch my pet for a couple months?'"

Polanski doesn't want a loss of a job or a medical issue to be a reason why someone has to get rid of a family member.

"People who are going to homeless shelters can't bring their pets with them or domestic violence shelters or even to the hospital," said Polanski.

The nonprofit will care for someone's pet for up to 90 days. And they are a no-kill shelter.

After years of helping people and pets, they want to buy their building in Tempe.

"We are here to care for homeless pets, but then again, we didn't have a home of our own," said Polanski.

They also need to add a medical room and update the homes for the dogs and cats.

They set a goal of $1.75 million. An anonymous donor stepped in and donated one million and other donations — like $250,000 — came from the Rachel Ray foundation. But they still have to raise $200,000 by May.
