Every year, the city of Tempe takes thousands of water samples to make ensure water is safe for customers.

ABC15 got an exclusive look at the state-certified lab in Tempe where chemists analyze city water to make sure it's the highest quality and safe to drink.

Tempe spokesperson David McNeil says in 2015, the city distributed 15 billion gallons of water to customers in both Tempe and Guadalupe.

McNeil says advances in technology helps show contaminants at lower levels.

"Some of the emerging technologies in the industry as a whole are looking more and more at recycling not only industrial water but reclaimed water," said McNeil.

"The technologies are to the point where water can be -- almost any water -- can be treated to a drinkable standard."
