FD: 10 people involved in Loop 101 crash in Tempe Tuesday night

Officials say 10 people are hospitalized after a serious crash on the Loop 101 in Tempe.

The accident happened just after 6:00 p.m. Tuesday night on southbound Loop 101 and Southern Avenue.

According to the Department of Public Safety, a white pickup truck was attempting to pass other cars in the lane between the barrier wall and the HOV lane.

The driver allegedly struck the barrier wall and swerved into six other cars on the freeway, a DPS spokesperson said.

One of the cars involved in the collision caught fire and is a total loss.

According to Tempe fire, there are a total of 10 patients. Two of the 10 patients were transported to local trauma centers, eight other patients suffered minor injuries.

The incident shut down the Loop 101 southbound for several hours. 

An investigation is ongoing and impairment is believed to have played a role in the crash.
