Mesa police are investigating after a group of four people claim their cellphones were stolen while playing basketball at an LA Fitness.

The alleged theft happened Tuesday around 6:45 p.m.

One of the victims says he was playing basketball when his iPhone 7 Plus was taken from his gym bag. Three other people also say they had their phones taken at the same time from the sideline of the game.

Jacob Lucchese says he talked to workers at the gym, but says he was told the gym doesn’t know the suspect’s identity.

Lucchese says the gym told him the suspect paid cash for a one-day pass and didn’t provide any identification. He also says he was told the gym does not have surveillance in the main entrance area, and it’s corporate policy leaves responsibility on the property owner.

Lucchese says the suspect was African American, around 5 feet 8 inches tall, in his late 20s and weighed around 140 pounds. Lucchese says the suspect also had on a white t-shirt and black basketball shorts.

ABC15 has reached out to LA Fitness for a statement on this issue, but was not given any comment.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Mesa Police Department.
