Mesa man assaults woman, leaves injured drinking buddies behind to flee police

Posted

Court records show that on June 26 just before 5 a.m. a Mesa man assaulted a woman, crashed his car and left his injured friends behind as he tried to elude police.

Mesa police report that 23-year-old Ray Anthony Anderson was driving with two friends, near Center Street and McClellan Road, when he saw a woman walking along the road. He allegedly began pestering her, but another man saw and came to the woman's aid.

Police reported that they saw Anderson back into a fence with his car before fighting with the man. As they approached, Anderson allegedly punched the woman, causing her nose to bleed.

Police say Anderson then took off in his car, lost control and rolled his vehicle. One of the passengers suffered a skull fracture. Anderson fled on foot and was soon caught by an officer who deployed his Taser.

Anderson was transported to the hospital "due to extreme intoxication." His blood alcohol content was measured at .116.

Anderson's passengers reportedly told police they were drinking in the car, sharing "three 40-ounce alcoholic beverages and four tall cans of beer."

Anderson has been charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, failure to stay at an injury accident and driving on a suspending license.
