GILBERT, AZ — A 13-year veteran with the Gilbert Police Department is being accused of sexual assault while off-duty.

Police say the department was notified of Officer Justin Betts' alleged misconduct involving an adult female in December of last year.

Officials say Gilbert detectives immediately began criminal and internal investigations into the alleged acts. Betts was placed in an administrative role during the investigation.

On February 4, 2021, Gilbert detectives finished their investigation and submitted the case to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review. Police say Betts is facing charges of attempted sexual abuse and public sexual indecency.

"The Gilbert Police Department values the trust of the community. We hold all of our employees to the highest standards and we thoroughly investigate all allegations of misconduct. The alleged acts are not reflective of the hard-working men and women at the Gilbert Police Department who serve our community every day," said Chief Michael Soelberg.
