GILBERT, AZ — Gilbert police are investigating after at least two children were exposed to cleaning chemicals at Freestone Park.

Police say that someone broke into a locked storage container nearby on Sunday morning, and stole cleaning supplies. The suspects then allegedly poured the chemicals on the slides at the park.

They also allegedly turned over trash cans among other vandalism.

Park rangers allegedly knew about the break-in, but originally thought that only soap was poured around the park.

Around 9:30 a.m. that day, the two two-year-old children slid down the slides and quickly developed rashes.

Police and fire crews responded to the scene and treated the children.

It’s unclear what chemicals the children were actually exposed to. Police have not said if the children had to be hospitalized or if they were only treated on scene.

Police say the broken lockers were replaced by ones with stronger locks. No suspect information has been released.

Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact police.
