A Tucson woman is accused of attempting to drown her months-old baby in a bathtub and later calling police to allegedly admit what she had done.

Leina Beckner, 28, called police on Friday night after removing her 9-month-old child from a bathtub filled with water.

Beckner allegedly admitted to police that she put her baby in the water but then removed the child and placed her on a bed, police said. She then called authorities after noticing that the baby was struggling to move or breath.

According to police, the baby’s father ended the relationship with Beckner earlier that day. She told officials she had planned to kill the baby and then herself.

The baby is hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to be OK.

Beckner is behind bars at Pima County Jail and was charged with child abuse and second-degree murder.
