The Phoenix Police Department found two individuals, who were dead, inside a west Phoenix home on Sunday afternoon and say a man first shot a woman before killing himself.

According to police, Adan Chavez, 43, shot Jessica Rubalcava, 33, before turning the gun on himself. Police said family members describe both individuals as husband and wife, but an actual marriage has yet to be confirmed by the department.

The couple did have children together, but none of the children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. The children are now in the care of family members.

According to officials, neighbors in the area of 51st Avenue and Camelback Road heard and saw what they thought was a burglary happening at a home around 1:45 p.m., but police said it was actually relatives who were kicking in a door of the house.

Police said inside the residence, relatives found the body of 33-year-old Rubacalba and 43-year-old Chavez. A gun was also found at the scene.

While investigating, police learned that family members had been trying to contact their loved ones for several hours as they were concerned for their welfare. Upon arriving at the home, they forced their way in when no one answered the door.

Police said at the time of the incident, they believe no one else was or had been in the home apart from the couple.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
