Two cousins, ages 7 and 8, are in critical condition after being hit by an SUV Saturday afternoon near 67th Avenue and Thomas.

According to firefighters, the 7-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy had just finished buying from an ice cream truck and were crossing in front of it into the street when they were struck.

“I heard the bump. It was so horrible. The kid was like this, he didn’t really respond. He was unconscious but he could breathe," said a 10-year-old girl, a friend of the kids.

Firefighters say the driver of the SUV was traveling at a moderate speed. He stopped at the scene, and witnesses say he called 911.

“We heard the cars start braking and just started screaming, and we ran outside, and we saw two children on the floor," said a woman who knows the children and didn't want to be identified.

She says she stayed with the kids until help came.

“Just to make sure they were breathing and everything is fine," she said.

Neighbors say both children were bleeding--the little boy was unresponsive, and the little girl was crying.

“It was horrible, and I wish that God would literally take care of them and they will be fine for the rest of their life," said the little girl.

Police say the driver is not facing any charges for hitting the kids, but he was arrested on unrelated charges.

The driver of the ice cream truck did not want to speak on camera, but was very shaken up. He said he's never experienced anything like what happened in his seven years of driving an ice cream truck.
