An off-duty firefighter detained a DUI suspect who reportedly caused a multi-car collision in West Phoenix recently.

Phoenix police report that on May 19 Gerardo Galeana Santana, age 23, was driving under the influence of alcohol when he caused a multiple-vehicle crash, near Grand and Glendale avenues.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Santana was traveling over 80 miles per hour when he struck a vehicle from behind, as he was going northwest on Grand Avenue.

He allegedly lost control of his car, crossing the centerline before coming back into his lane and striking another vehicle, before hitting a fence.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Santana tried to leave the scene but was detained by an off-duty firefighter.

Police say Santana has a felony warrant for his arrest for aggravated DUI and has had several DUI's in less than a year.

He's again been charged with aggravated DUI.
