There’s a new push in Maryvale to help residents land jobs and drive economic growth.

By providing job training and wraparound services to residents, the Maryvale+ Workforce Initiative’s goal is to land 2,500 people jobs by June 2018.

To kick off the initiative, there will be a large job fair Tuesday at the Legends Event Center. It has been organized by Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) Workforce Solutions, Arizona@Works, Goodwill, Dress For Success, and Rio Salado College.

Director of Workforce CPLC Victor Contreras says there will be a team ready to help people finish or create resumes.

There will be more than a dozen companies there looking to hire for various positions including entry-level banking, hospitality, medical and retail.

Despite an increase in online shopping, Contreras says retail is still one of the biggest job suppliers in Maryvale -- about 43 percent.

"Just south of Maryvale many people actually work in the logistics hub with Amazon and other different logistic based companies," said Contreras.

Some of the companies looking to hire: Walmart, Chase, CenturyLink, Banner Health, Starbucks, UPS and Los Altos Ranch Market.

“One of the issues that faces Maryvale is there's a lack of skills,” said Contreras. “We haven't done enough to help train people and prepare them for the workplace. That’s something we're working on with the Maricopa Community College District very strongly and we're going to turn that around hopefully in the next year.”

If people cannot attend Tuesday, CPLC will be streaming on Facebook Live, talking with employers at the job fair.
