Family seeks answers after 2 die in fiery crash

Posted

Family members of Jesus Torres-Calles say they are looking for answers after the 27-year-old Phoenix resident was killed in a fiery crash involving a Valley Metro bus.

Both Torres-Calles and Juan Avilla were killed after the Sunday morning crash. Friends say Avilla was trapped in the car while it burned.

"I want to be able to believe in what they are doing," said an emotional cousin of Torres-Calles who declined to give her full name.

"We all got a phone call saying what happened and we are just in shock and disbelief that he is gone."

A witness who saw the crash recorded several minutes of video of the car burning.

Gustavo Cortez says firefighters took nearly 10 minutes to arrive and that the driver of the bus did nothing to help.

ABC15 spoke with representatives from both the City of Phoenix and the Phoenix Fire Department.

The fire department says that while they are not aware of any immediate problems with their response they will go ahead and review the incident.

A spokesperson with the City of Phoenix transit department says that all buses are equipped with fire extinguishers and that they are waiting for police to determine the cause of the crash.
