Police say they’re investigating after what appear to be the remains of a child were found during construction of a new home in Phoenix

Investigators were seen at the home near 87th Avenue and Indian School Road Tuesday. Police say the remains were first found around 1:30 p.m.

Police say homicide detectives are now investigating the remains to try to identify the young child.

Police spokesman Sgt. Vince Lewis said the remains appeared to be much younger than recent high-profile missing persons cases in the West Valley.

It is "too soon" to determine whether the remains belong to a specific individual, he said, saying a lot of work will have to go into making an identification.

"There are thousands of open missing persons cases as well as unidentified bodies in Arizona. Each new find has potential for closing one of those open cases," Sgt. Lewis said. "It is definitely on our minds, but it will likely take time to make any such connections."

Glendale police tell ABC15 they have been in contact with Phoenix police. They do not believe the human remains are connected to any Glendale cases. Jhessye Shockley went missing in 2011 from her Glendale home and was never found.

Buckeye police say they have not been contacted by Phoenix police regarding the human remains. Jesse Wilson went missing in July 2016 and has never been found.

Tempe police has also not been contacted by Phoenix police. Tempe police is the lead agency for the Baby Gabriel case.
