Firefighters say there's something unusual about a fire that ignited in a north Phoenix apartment complex Monday night.

Crews responded to a complex near 14th Street and Bell Road for a reported structure fire.

A department spokesman said a man inside heard something and saw a flash. He, along with a woman and two children, were able to get out, but the man cut his hand trying to extinguish the flames.

The fire did enough damage that the family could not return to the apartment overnight.

Officials said the fire is "peculiar" and would be investigated further.

No other information was available.
