The Phoenix Fire Department responded to reports of a full code of an adult male on North Mountain Sunday afternoon.
Another hiker reported he saw the man fall off the trail, and was unresponsive once approached.
Phoenix fire said an off-duty Peoria firefighter performed CPR to the man on scene before crews arrived.
Crews quickly worked their way up the mountain near 7th Street to get the man down from the mountain.

A spokesman with the fire department confirmed the man has died after being transported to the hospital.
The cause of death is currently unknown.
