PHOENIX — A 19-year-old Phoenix man is accused of abusing a 5-month-old girl who was brought to a hospital with multiple injuries.
Officers were called to Phoenix Children’s on Monday after receiving reports of an injured child.
The parents initially said the 5-month-old girl rolled off the bed, according to police documents. Later, Mario Hernandez said he got “frustrated” while caring for his daughter and “blacked out.”
Police say Hernandez told them he pushed the child onto the bed in a rough manner and placed his hand over her mouth to stop her crying. He said he then squeezed the child and heard a “crack” but didn’t think anything of it.
The child suffered a brain bleed, a rib fracture and lesion at the back of her throat.
Hernandez was booked into jail on three counts of child abuse.
