Bars over your windows may keep you safer from crime, but fire officials say they made fighting a house fire much more difficult on Monday morning.

According to Phoenix Fire officials, a home near 39th Avenue and Osborn Road caught fire and bars on the windows made it difficult for crews to get inside.

Firefighters were forced to cut a hole in the roof to get inside and were only then able to make sure no one was home. Fortunately, no occupants were found inside and they were able to quickly break down the flames.

The fire moved quickly and jumped to the outside of the home, according to information at the scene. Damage is so significat that officials say the house is a total loss.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
