A high-rise building in downtown Phoenix was evacuated Wednesday evening after a cleaning crew reported smelling a natural gas odor.

Phoenix Fire Captain Ardell Deliz said the workers smelled the odor on the ninth floor in the lobby area of a multi-story office building near Central Avenue and Osborn Road.

Firefighters scoured the building, including the basement, and detected zero readings of any kind, said Deliz.

While crews were investigating, firefighters received two more reports of an odor from two other buildings nearby. Those were investigated and no readings were detected either.

Southwest Gas and Water Department officials determined the gas was non-flammable, traveled quickly and then dissipated, according to Deliz.

The buildings were reopened at 10:12 p.m. No one was injured.

The investigation did cause the light rail to run at a slower rate than normal temporarily.
