Family at hospital as man robs home, steals car

Technology is credited with helping catch a man who robbed a home and stole a car while the victim's family was having a baby.

Court paperwork shows that 38-year-old Joseph Mikrut Jr. has been accused of stealing a family's car and robbing their home as they were at the hospital on Dec. 19.

In addition to the car, Mikrut stole about $20,000 worth of items including electronic equipment, jewelry and a laptop computer.

The car was equipped with Onstar technology which lead police to the location of the vehicle near 44th Street. and McDowell, where undercover officers remotely disabled the vehicle and took Mikrut into custody.

Mikrut was found armed and had several items belonging to the victims, as well burglary tools in his possession.

Mikrut told police that this was the first time he was in the car, however, police noticed that the suspect's cell phone number was programmed into the car's Bluetooth system radio. 

Mikrut has prior felony convictions and being held without bond.
