A Phoenix man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend with a hammer has pleaded not guilty.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 25-year-old Caleb Shaffery was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge Tuesday.
His next scheduled court date is Feb. 3. Shaffery remains jailed on a $1 million bond.
According to court paperwork, Shaffery called 911 on Dec. 6 to say he killed his ex-girlfriend at his home.
Shaffery allegedly lured Veronica McGarvy into a room where he hit her several times in the head with a roofing hammer and then stabbed her in the chest.
Both the hammer and the knife were found at the scene along with the couple's 3-year-daughter who wasn't harmed.
Investigators say Shaffery recently learned through social media that McGarvy was dating one of his former co-workers.
