A man accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend and slicing her throat has died following an "inmate-on-inmate" attack at Fourth Avenue Jail.
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Brandon Jones said 71-year-old Kenneth Rhodes was assaulted by an inmate in the housing unit sometime around noon Tuesday.
Rhodes was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Rhodes was arrested Monday on charges of sexual abuse, sexual assault, kidnapping and attempted murder after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend.
According to police documents, the couple was arguing before Rhodes started punching the victim. He then put a large kitchen knife to her neck and threatened to kill her before forcing her to take off her clothes.
Jones said deputies have a suspect in the jail attack, but the inmate's identity has not been released yet as the investigation is ongoing.
