A young pit bull is now recovering after being brought to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control in rough shape on Valentine's Day.

According to MCACC spokesperson Melissa Gable, the 1-year-old dog was brought to the facility on Tuesday by a Good Samaritan.

The pup, fittingly named "Valentine," was found covered in ticks with "deep wounds" to his head, Gable said. He also appears to have been mutilated in what appears to have been a botched "home cropping." At the time he was found his ears were also infested with maggots.

Gable describes him as a very sweet dog and he is now in foster care. However, he'll eventually need to find his forever home.

No word as to what happened to the dog, but at this point, it's unknown who the old owner is.
