PHOENIX — Officials are investigating a serious crash along Interstate 10 near downtown Phoenix.

The crash reportedly occurred around 12:15 a.m. Friday in the westbound lanes near the interchange with northbound Interstate 17.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say a Volkswagen passenger car was traveling westbound negotiating a right curve prior to Buckeye Road, when it lost control, went across all lanes of traffic, struck the cement barrier wall, and rolled in the median facing north, landing on its wheels.

The driver and passenger of the Volkswagen got out of the vehicle. For an unknown reason the passenger lied down in the HOV lane, where he was struck by another vehicle.

He was transported to a hospital for treatment. His current condition is unclear.

Witness information revealed the Volkswagen was racing two other vehicles prior to losing control.

A blue Nissan Maxima or Altima stopped at the crash scene. DPS said a white female passenger with red hair exited the Nissan and spoke briefly with one of the occupants of the Volkswagen and then left.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is requesting the driver and passenger of the Nissan call AZDPS at 877-2-SAVEAZ (877-272-8329) to provide information to the investigators that may assist with the crash investigation.
