Authorities say a man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a police officer and discharging a firearm within Phoenix's city limits.

Police say 27-year-old Geovanny Galvez was booked into jail Sunday.

Galvez was ordered held without bail after his initial court appearance Monday and doesn't have an attorney yet.

Four police officers responded to an apartment complex about 6 a.m. Sunday after calls of shots fired.

While searching the area, they encountered an armed man who allegedly pointed a gun at one of the police officers.

One officer fired his service handgun at the man, who wasn't struck.

The man was taken into custody and later identified as Galvez.

Police say Galvez told officers he had been drinking beer and hard liquor until around 2 a.m. Sunday.
