Officials say two people were pulled from a car after it crashed with a semi Tuesday night.

A Phoenix Fire Department spokesman said bystanders pulled out the passenger before crews arrived on scene near 32nd Street and Van Buren, but special tools were needed to free the driver.

The driver had no pulse and was not breathing, and all resuscitation efforts were made on the patient on the way to the hospital. The passenger was hospitalized in serious condition. Authorities did not immediately have updates on how they were doing.

The driver of the semi did not need to be taken to the hospital, firefighters said.

The crash is under investigation by the Phoenix Police Department. An email sent late Tuesday night seeking details about the crash was not immediately returned.

An ABC15 crew on the scene said Van Buren was closed from 29th to 32nd streets while officers investigated the crash.
