Firefighters responded to a mulch fire just down the street from the department's training academy Sunday afternoon.
A unit first noticed a plume of smoke coming from near the Phoenix Fire Regional Training Academy in the area of 27th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.
The unit made its way to the smoke and discovered it was a mulch fire at a business just west of the academy.
Crews responded and were able to contain it quickly, firefighters said.
Authorities said they turned the scene over to the business owner, who was using his own water trucks and front loaders to soak the mulch piles.
