Candles lined the sidewalk Wednesday night outside a homicide victim’s home in downtown Phoenix.
"I cannot imagine why somebody would want to murder my son,” the victim’s father, Martin McLean, said.
McLean was among dozens of Matthew’s friends and family members at a candlelight memorial at the home Wednesday.
"For this to have happened in such a shocking fashion haunts me,” McLean said. He said the crime scene was a grisly one.
He added that someone took his son’s phone, dog, and car – a grey or black 2008 Audio A3.
Matthew recently bought the car in California and had not yet registered the vehicle in Arizona, so it still had a California tag.
Matthew was a medical marijuana caregiver, his father confirmed. But his father had no idea whether that played any role in Matthew’s homicide.
Dozens of Matthew’s friends stayed for hours at the candlelight gathering.
An enlarged picture of the lifelong Valley resident was illuminated by votive candles late into the night.
Anyone with any information on the case is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at (602) -262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. Callers who contact Silent Witness may remain anonymous.
Matthew’s memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 28th at St. Francis Xavier Parish, located at 4715 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix, according to family.
